You may have seen we have recently installed two nesting rafts on Longwater Lake. We hope these rafts will improve breeding conditions for bird species such as common tern (Sterna hirundo), which are known to forage within Green Park.
Common terns like to lay their eggs in open areas, such as sandy or shingle lake shores and coastlines. Our purpose-built rafts replicate these types of habitats, whilst providing suitable nesting areas that are safe from flooding, disturbance and predators. As well as offering breeding habitat for common tern, the rafts will also provide new loafing spots for other species of wildfowl that use the lake.
